photoThis past weekend the Richmond Hill Minor Ball Hockey League sent its Novice provincial team to compete in the South Simcoe Championships held in Alliston.

The novice team is coached by Paul Carreira who in my mind had the toughest schedule of the 3 teams playing all its games on Saturday. Their first test was Beeton, a very well run organization with a lot of talented players. It was a close game but in the end they fell short and lost 4-2.

After the loss Paul and the team went out for breakfast and regrouped the kids for Shelburne, its next opposition.  The team played much better this time around and after moving up 4-1 it looked like the Stars were going to run away with this one. With minutes left to play Shelburne pressed hard and capitalized on two give a ways to put them within one. With the score 4-3, Shelburne had pulled its goalie but failed to tie in the dying seconds thus giving the Stars its first victory of the tournament.

After the round robin Beeton went undefeated and earned itself a spot right into the gold medal game. Shelburne was to face Richmond Hill in a single game elimination just hours after they played each other in a hard fought battle. Once the ball dropped the Stars moved forward and never looked back. The team played hard and earned itself a spot into the gold medal game with a 3-1 victory over Shelburne.

The weather was hot and the team was tired but yet they looked forward to the rematch vs. Beeton.

In the first period both teams had their chances but both failed to score. With one period remaining the stars began to show fatigue and allowed Beeton to score its first goal early in the second.  The Stars did have a few chances to tie it up but the Beeton goalie stood on his head and shut the door. The Stars did play hard but unfortunately they did run out of gas and allowed two more goals and lost the game to Beeton 3-0.

I would like to thank all the players and coaching staff in bringing home the silver medal

Congratulations to you all
